Ready for Electric Cars Running on Hydrogen on the Roads?
Japan is already making plans to have their car industry become more
of a “hydrogen society”. Toyota, Nissan and Honda motor companies are planning
to help cover the cost of operating hydrogen stations throughout Japan. They
plan to cover as much as one third of the operating expenses which will be
capped at around 11 million yen ($90,000) per station. The program will run
until about 2020 and cost an estimated 5 to 6 billion yen, said Kiyotaka Ise,
senior managing officer at Toyota.
The national and local governments of Japan
have also said that they will subsidize the cost of operating these hydrogen
stations. They’re doing this because they want to help popularize cars that are
powered by hydrogen fuel cells and Japan plans on building hydrogen
distribution facilities throughout the country to help encourage the next
generation of other technology. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said the nation
will create a “hydrogen society,” with the hydrogen fuel cell also powering
homes and office buildings.
“Fuel-cell vehicles running on hydrogen are
electric vehicles without the compromises, such as range anxiety and long waits
in front of charging stations,” Thanh Ha Pham, a Tokyo-based analyst at
Jefferies Group LLC, said in a report. “We expect increasing focus on this
technology.” It is estimated that Japan’s market for vehicles using hydrogen is expected to grow to almost ¥100 billion by
fiscal year 2025. Toyota is way ahead of the game since last year they had
already introduced the Mirai, a fuel cell car and Honda plans to put one out
themselves this fiscal year. The world is changing fast but if you’re ready to
