Google to Compete Directly with Uber Vehicles

It looks like Uber is about to have some serious competition in the very near future. Google is planning on creating a driver-less car company that will spin off their autonomous car unit into a separate company that will operate under its new Alphabet corporate umbrella. This will be a car-for-hire company to compete directly with Uber but has yet to create a name for it as of date.

This entire journey into driver-less cars began back in 2009 when Google began testing their own autonomous cars using Lexus RX crossovers and then revealing their two-seat, two-door, carbon-fiber body autonomous prototype in 2014. Their autonomous car unit has been operating under the Google X advanced projects division but will soon be supervised and operated under their new company under the Alphabet corporate umbrella.

“By challenging ride-sharing pioneers like Uber and Lyft Inc., as well as traditional taxis, Google is providing the clearest indication yet of how it plans to make money from self-driving automotive technologies,” Bloomberg reported. “I think the product that they’re making is a completely different product than what we are making,” Erik Coelingh, Volvo’s senior technical leader of autonomy recently told Automobile. Google hopes that they will have this technology and service readily available to the public as soon as five years from now.

The future of automated cars will be here before we know it but if you’re still one of those individuals that still want to be in control of your own driving responsibilities, you’re still in luck because car manufacturers will still be developing and offering new innovative cars all the time.
